Local and Imported Wheat Quality Reviewed
Wheat samples of the 2019/2020 season were the first crop survey to be graded according to the latest bread wheat grading regulations published in the Government Gazette No. 42862, dated 29 November 2019.
Quality Tested in Latest Survey
The second annual sorghum crop survey determined the quality of sorghum planted during the last quarter of 2018 and harvested during the first quarter of 2019.
Maize Crop in the Spotlight
The 2018/2019 maize production season is represented by the results of the 22nd annual maize crop quality survey. A total of 808 composite samples, representing white and yellow maize from 28 of the 36 production regions in South Africa
Sunflower Crop Survey Expanded
When decisions need to be made, the absence of or an incomplete or outdated database can cause significant problems to industry. This was the main reason for the Oil and Protein Seed Development Trust’s decision to fund the annual sunflower crop quality surveys eight years ago.
Crop Quality Results Are In
The first and very crucial step in any crop survey is obtaining the samples that will provide information about the quality of the crop. Without the cooperation of the commercial grain silo owners, members of Agbiz Grain, who supply these samples to the Southern African Grain Laboratory (SAGL) without any cost, these surveys would not be possible.
Quality of the 2018/2019 Season’s Wheat Crop Examined
The 2018/2019 season represented the 21st annual wheat crop quality survey. The aim of these surveys is to accumulate commercial wheat crop quality data on a national level to assist the industry in decision-making processes. A total of 337 wheat crop samples from 28 different regions throughout the wheat producing areas of South Africa were graded and analysed.
Maize Crop Quality – a Look at the 2017/2018 Season’s Results
During the 2018 harvesting season, a representative sample of each delivery of maize at the various grain intake points was taken according to the prescribed grading regulation. A total of 900 composite samples, representing white and yellow maize of each production region, were received and analysed to determine the quality.
Sunflower Crop Quality – a Look at the 2017/2018 Season’s Results
In the sixth annual sunflower crop quality survey that was performed by the Southern African Grain Laboratory (SAGL), 176 crop samples representing the various production regions were tested. Samples, provided by members of Agbiz Grain, were forwarded to SAGL by commercial grain silo owners and received from July to November 2018.
Annual Soybean Crop Quality Under Scrutiny
Soybeans are the most important oilseed crop produced in South Africa, driven mainly by the demand for protein feed (in this case soybean oilcake) from the animal feed industry.
Local and Imported: Wheat Quality Scrutinised
Wheat contributed 79% to the total winter cereal crop production in South Africa during the 2017/2018 production season. The Southern African Grain Laboratory (SAGL) received and analysed 304 samples to provide as best possible a proportional representation of the production of wheat in all the different production regions.
